NBN fixed wireless. It gives a huge speed improvement over Telstra ADSL. It allows watching of HD video on multiple devices, quick webpage updates and far greater download speeds. Great when it works.
The NBN isn’t perfect, over time some would find it gradually getting slower and slower until it was barely useable or there would be no connection at all. To resolve the issue it would be necessary to turn the power off and on to the NBN co provided modem. Once the modem had re-connected it would be okay again for a number of days until you would have to turn the power off and on again.
This can be very frustrating particularly during the day as you would need to stop work when this happens and restart the modem wait 10 minutes then go back to what you were doing.
What is a simple solution is to install a smart switch with a timer. In this case a TP-Link Smart Plug. These devices are relatively cheap and can be purchased at your local consumer electronics store.
With the use of the accompanying smartphone app this switch allows for the power to be turn off at a convenient time. We turn the modem off at 3am every morning for 5 minutes. This has the effect of clearing the memory of the modem and allowing a clean boot. Our tests have shown a significant lower amount of dropouts and they are more likely due to the Service Provider now rather than the modem now.
We hope this blog helps some people having issues.
